Traditional Thai Massage, Training and Insurance Coverage: What You Should Know

One question we are often asked at Thai Healing Center is whether Traditional Thai Massage can be claimed through workplace or extended health benefits.

The answer is sometimes — but it depends on your individual insurance plan.

Why does coverage vary?

In Ontario, Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are regulated through the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. Many extended health benefit plans are written specifically to cover treatment provided by an RMT.

Traditional Thai Massage is different. It has its own history, training methods and professional traditions, and practitioners may be recognized through professional associations outside Ontario's RMT system.

Because of this, simply having “massage therapy” included in your benefits does not necessarily mean Traditional Thai Massage will automatically be covered.

At the same time, some insurance plans do provide coverage for Traditional Thai Massage when treatment is provided by a practitioner who belongs to a recognized professional association, such as the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada (NHPC).

The important thing to remember is that coverage is determined by your individual benefits plan, not simply by the insurance company providing the plan.

Not all Thai Massage training is the same

Another important consideration is the training of the practitioner providing your treatment.

The term Thai Massage can be used by practitioners with very different levels of education and experience.

Training can range from short introductory courses to extensive study in Traditional Thai Massage, anatomy, assisted stretching, therapeutic techniques and traditional Thai healing practices.

That does not necessarily mean one practitioner is right for every client, but it does mean it is reasonable to ask questions about someone's background before choosing where to receive treatment.

You may want to ask:

• Where did the practitioner train?
• How extensive was their Thai Massage training?
• How long have they been practising?
• Do they continue their education?
• Do they belong to a recognized professional association?

At Thai Healing Center, we believe training matters. Traditional Thai Massage is much more than adding a few stretches to a conventional massage. Understanding how the techniques work together, when to use them and how to adapt a treatment to the individual takes proper training and experience.

Insurance coverage and practitioner training are not the same thing

It is also important not to confuse insurance coverage with the quality of a treatment.

Whether an insurance company reimburses a particular service is determined by the wording of an individual benefits plan.

It is not a measure of how well trained a practitioner is or of the history and value of Traditional Thai Massage.

Thai Massage has a long-established tradition with its own techniques, teaching systems and approach to working with the body.

For clients, the better questions are often:

Who is providing my treatment? How were they trained? What experience do they have?

What should I ask my insurance company?

If you plan to submit your treatment through an insurance or workplace benefits plan, we recommend checking before your appointment.

Rather than simply asking:

“Do I have massage coverage?”

try asking:

“Does my plan cover Traditional Thai Massage provided by an NHPC-recognized Thai Massage practitioner?”

You may also want to ask whether your insurer needs:

• the practitioner's name;
• their professional association;
• their membership or registration number; or
• any other information before you receive treatment.

This can help avoid surprises when you submit your receipt.

Know who you are booking with

Traditional Thai Massage can look very different depending on the practitioner's training and experience.

We encourage people to learn a little about the person providing their treatment rather than choosing solely by price, availability or whether the word “Thai Massage” appears on a service menu.
